Port Gellhorn
The forgotten coast of LeonidaLive Hard
This is Leonida’s forgotten coast.
Cheap motels, shut-down attractions, and empty strip malls won’t bring the tourists back, but there’s a new economy in this once-popular vacation spot. It’s fueled by malt liquor, painkillers, and truck stop energy drinks. Jump on a dirt bike and hold onto your wallet.
Port Gellhorn is a city in the western part of Leonida, located in Kelly County, featured in Grand Theft Auto VI. The city occupies a vast coastal area with a mix of commercial and industrial infrastructure, interspersed with dense forests, open grassy fields, and rolling hills. Notable points of interest include a pawn shop, a liquor store, the Crossroad Park Minimall, the Bocamar Bridge, the Delights strip club, and the city’s seaport.
Port Gellhorn is primarily inspired by Panama City, Florida, and its surrounding Bay County municipalities, including Parker, Callaway, and Springfield. Its seaport appears to be modeled after Port Tampa Bay in Tampa, Florida.
The city’s name pays homage to American novelist and journalist Martha Gellhorn, who covered the U.S. invasion of Panama in 1989 and later traveled to Panama City, Panama, to report on civilian casualties resulting from the invasion. Both Panama City, Panama, and the city of the same name in Florida — which serves as the primary inspiration for Port Gellhorn — derive their names from the country of Panama, situated along the Panama Canal.
The “Port” element of the name is likely derived from Port Charlotte, Florida, which, together with nearby Punta Gorda, mirrors Port Gellhorn’s coastal bayside location directly west of Lake Leonida.
